Raining bullets on a swarm from above guarantees safety in many situations, as most Hoxxes residents do not have ranged attacks. Lastly, don't forget that a zipline is not just a traversal tool, but also a combat one. Ideally, your ziplines should form a chain allowing a dwarf to go from the lowest point in a cave to the highest without dropping his Aquarq. Avoid the temptation to put ziplines everywhere or end them right at a the mineral dropoff hopper as it can become difficult for a player to accurately select which of these he wants to activate in a tense situation. Unless the target is a wall mineral outcropping (meaning your Scout and Engineer don't Know Their Roles), either end of the zipline should be accessible with a jump so aim for a target near to the ground. Any place where the entire team will need to go up or down a cliff is a good spot to fire a line off. Other than shooting and shielding, your zipline gun can be a substantial time saver, particularly in Point Extraction missions where large object cargos must be brought back to the minehead. if two teammates are down (especially if they are close together as might happen if said Scout was not paying attention to what downed the first victim) stop shooting that Dreadnought for a second and drop a shield on the both of them to get the team back in the fight. While one of the Scout's jobs is the general single teammate revive, your shield projector makes the clutch pickup your responsibilty.
As for shields in general, don't be stingy with them - if your health is taking damage, everyone else's probably is too. Adding a few incendiary or cluster grenades to the mix (for Thorbardin's sake, OUTSIDE the shield) will take the fight out of all but the most sporty Hoxxes welcoming committee. bugs at point blank range on all sides, dropping a shield projector gives everyone a safe space to hide in for at least a few seconds. If you sense that during a swarm the team is being overrun, i.e. Secondary to this protective role is your shield projector. Keep in mind that large stationary targets like Spitballers or Brood Nexûs fall under your main responsibility as high HP targets. While they can on their own each eventually defeat a Large size bug like a Praetorian or Menace, you can simply aim at these targets and pull the trigger - ending the threat in short order.
Primarily this means focusing fire on the biggest targets as soon as they appear. Your task as a Gunner is the protection of the other dwarves on your team. Gunner is the best class to learn the game with, because his responsibility is very simple: shoot the big ones first.
